Who’s Sharpening You?
Last week was all about me (and I think you so much for the support!) but today I want to bring you back to a question I asked in the beginning of the year: Who’s Sharpening You?
I asked this before in my Sparring Partners blog post, but I think it’s time for a mid year check-in!
Recently, I visited a cute little coffee shop in the Germantown area of Nashville. Their tea was just as strong as their wifi and they had tons of tables and outlets – my kind of place!
The Meet Up
The reason I was there was because my co-worker Alexis (I still have to get used to saying “co-worker”) organized a meet up with some of her online community and invited me to join them. Now remember, my new role as Associate Producer is with an online tech company, so me seeing Alexis in person (rather than on a computer) is rare, although we’re in the same city. I was excited to come and work on my passion projects, not only with Alexis, but with people within her community that she coins as “The Laptop Lifestyle.” You should actually check out her podcast and website, they’re both super dope. The intention was to come there and work on our projects, talk about them, and hold each other accountable.
When I got there, the only person I knew was Alexis but by the time I left, we already planned another meet up.
We sat there, with our laptops, discussing things like content photo shoots, social media feeds, website hosting, email course creating, travel photography, and the list goes on and on. We also got personal and shared stories of burnout, client partnerships that had gone awry, relationships, meeting friends, and just life.
Premium Gas Only
If you remember my blog #PremiumGasOnly, you know that I have groups of really awesome friends that reciprocate encouragement, love, and support. It’s so cool to have yet another squad who understands the creative side of me that I’m developing and continue to keep me sharp and motivated. I sat there in that coffee shop grateful for more iron to help me and couldn’t help but think about you. I said to myself, “I need to bring this back up to you. It’s going in the blog!”
One of my favorite mind-shifting quotes can be found in the Bible: As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17)
This week, I want you to ask yourself who is sharpening me? Who is around me, personally and professionally, that help to propel me? Write their names down so you know who they are exactly. And then…(drumroll) lean on them for help and support. Your iron people aren’t just here to eat cookies with you and chill, they’re here to help you become the best you that you can be. In order to do that, you need to mentally know their role in your life and your role in theirs. They also need to know that they’re part of your iron squad. Iron sharpening iron is intentional and reciprocal.
What Happens If You Don’t Have Any Iron?
If you’re still looking at the blank sheet of paper or note in your phone thinking…I don’t have any iron, I got you! I didn’t always have iron around me, trust me. So, try these action items:
- Pray for a community of people who understand you now and will understand your future self
- Know who you are without iron so that you don’t mistakenly idolize, people please, or envy those who come in your life (because these people will already be movers and shakers)
- Join meet ups, community organizations, or clubs of like minded people
- Show up to various community events and be friendly (if you’re an introvert, this is hard but it’s possible!)
- IMPORTANT: Vet potential people to see if they can be iron. Sometimes you get tin foil in disguise, so be observant
- Know what your value is and offer to help others
Remember, You’re a Hot Fudge Sundae
If you’re thinking, “I’m good, I don’t need any iron,” I would challenge you by saying that vanilla ice cream is good by itself, but, it’s not a sundae. It’s not until you add the brownies, cookies, whipped cream, cherries, hot fudge (you see where I’m going with this) that it transforms into something else, something greater than what it is alone. Don’t be a basic vanilla scoop, you’ve got Hot Fudge Sundae written all over you.
I hope you take inventory this week and know who is among you. You may have to go through some bad apples, but they won’t spoil the bunch. Stay sharp so you can sharpen others.
I’ll see you next week!
